The MACU baseball team took the four-game series against Southwestern on Sunday as the Evangels held on for a hard-fought 4-3 victory in game one before falling 7-3 in game two to split the doubleheader against the Moundbuilders at the MACU Baseball Field.

GAME NOTES

  • Mid-America Christian scored four runs on eight hits and committed one error while Southwestern finished with three runs on eight hits.
  • Southwestern mustered the first major threat by loading the bases with two outs, but MACU starter Cameron Brown was able to get out of the jam by inducing a groundout to short.
  • The Evangels pushed across the first runs in the bottom of the frame as three straight batters reached on an Andrew Enwiya single and a Conner McKinney walk before Carlos Medina drove in the first on a single through the right side. With runners on the corners, Devon Villaneva drove in Conner McKinney by smashing a sac fly to left field to make it a 2-0 game.
  • MACU added one more in the bottom of the third when Enwiya smashed a fly ball to deep left that was snared in foul territory, but the batted ball was deep enough to score Noel McGarry-Doyle, stretching the edge to 3-0.
  • The Evangels nearly got out of a jam in the fourth when Cameron Brown picked off a runner at first for the second out, but a passed ball allowed Josh Crabtree to score from third to cut the MACU lead to 3-1.
  • Southwestern closed the gap to one on Tyler Seboldt's sac fly to center to score Marcus Burton, but the Evangels immediately got the run back in the bottom of the sixth as Medina drove in K.J. Moo-Young on a single to center to set the score to 4-2.
  • A Chris Weatherford RBI double in the seventh allowed the Moundbuilders to close it back to a one-run game, but MACU closer Kelton Lachelt abruptly ended the contest by getting Joe Finder to line out to center as Tylor Richie's relay throw to second was in time to double off Weatherford.
  • Cameron Brown earned his second win of the season after tossing five strong innings, allowing just one unearned run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
  • Reese Cusiter made his first appearance of the 2023 season, allowing only one unearned run one hit.
  • Kelton Lachelt boosted his SAC-leading saves number to four after allowing one earned run on two hits.
  • Carlos Medina and Tylor Richie led the MACU bats with a pair of hits apiece as Medina went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
  • Andrew Enwiya and Devon Villanueva tallied the two other MACU RBIs.
  • By getting the win, Mid-America Christian took the series with its third win.
  • The Evangels improved to 8-0 in games decided by three or less runs this season.

TEAM NOTES

  • The Moundbuilders scored their seven runs on nine hits and committed one error while the Evangels tallied three runs on six hits and made three miscues.
  • Southwestern broke the game open in the second inning by pushing across three runs, but the Evangels managed to get a run back in the bottom half of the frame when Cole Fuecker lofted a solo shot that just got over the right field fence for his third homer of the season, cutting it to a 3-1 game.
  • MACU battled back to tie it when Conner McKinney knocked in Makael Shaw with a fielder's choice play at the plate before Carlos Medina drew the game even with an RBI single to right to score Fuecker. The Evangels had an opportunity to add more with the bases loaded and no outs, but a pair of strikeouts and a lineout allowed the Moundbuilders to keep it to a tie game.
  • Southwestern blew the game open once again with a three-run sixth. After loading the bases with no one outs, Will Johannsen drove in one with a bases-loaded walk before a fielder's choice groundout and a failed pickoff play on a throwing error stretched the Moundbuilders edge to 6-3.
  • SWC added one more insurance run in the seventh on a Tyler Seboldt RBI single to wrap-up the scoring at 7-3.
  • For the second straight game, Medina led the MACU bats by going 2-for-3 with an RBI while Cole Fuecker finished 1-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch, a homer, an RBI and two runs scored.
  • After a rough second inning, MACU starter Isaac Baez bounced back with a strong third and fourth inning, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts over two scoreless frames.
  • Levi Mobley suffered his first loss of the season on the mound after allowing two earned runs on a hit and a walk.
  • The defeat snapped MACU's seven-game win streak as well as handed the Evangels their first home loss of the season.
